Clinical Research Associates remain one of the most critical, and most discussed roles in clinical research. As trials grow more complex, technology advances, and delivery models continue to evolve, understanding how CRAs feel about their roles, employers and futures has never been more important.
That’s why we’re pleased to share the latest findings from the RBW Consulting CRA Report, offering a global snapshot of CRA sentiment at the start of 2026.
This year’s data paints a nuanced picture. On the surface, CRAs appear more settled, with longer tenure and generally positive feelings toward their employers. Dig a little deeper, however, and a more complex story emerges, one shaped by ambition, evolving expectations, and a role undergoing significant transformation.
While many CRAs report feeling valued, a large proportion remain open to new opportunities. The driver behind this isn’t dissatisfaction; it’s progression. Clear development pathways, role evolution and meaningful scope continue to outweigh almost every other factor when CRAs consider their next move.
Travel expectations, meanwhile, have remained remarkably consistent. Despite the continued expansion of remote monitoring tools and risk‑based approaches, site visits are still a fundamental part of the role reinforcing the importance of strong site relationships and hands‑on oversight.
Perhaps most striking are CRAs’ views on the future. Technology and AI are widely expected to reshape how work is done, reducing administrative burden and increasing analytical responsibility. At the same time, there is a strong and consistent message that the “human element” (site engagement, judgement and relationship‑building) must not be lost in the process.
Taken together, the findings highlight a key challenge for sponsors and CROs alike: how to design CRA roles that evolve with technology, while remaining engaging, sustainable and meaningful for the people doing them.
