Are you experienced in setting up laboratory operations from scratch? Do you have strong expertise in immunoassays and bioanalytical work? Do you want to work for a growing start-up with exciting assets in the neurodegeneration field?

Our client a small biotech with an exciting early-stage pipeline in the field of Neurodegeneration is looking to recruit a Laboratory Director. The Lab Director will take full responsibility for the setup of a new laboratory being opened by the business in H2 2023. This lab will be where future development of the pipeline is carried out alongside designing bioanalytical methods to be used as the lead asset moves into clinic.

As the Laboratory Director, you will be responsible for the set up and oversight of all aspects of laboratory operations, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and driving the development of innovative research projects alongside bioanalytical test methods. Your expertise in laboratory management, scientific techniques, and team leadership will play a vital role in advancing our mission and achieving our organisational goals.

Responsibilities:
  • Laboratory set-up: Identify key equipment needed for the lab and take charge of negotiatons and installation. Be involved in the recruitment and appointment of laboratory staff. Develop and implement the laboratory's strategic vision, aligning it with the company's overall objectives.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, including resource allocation, budgeting, and procurement. Ensure compliance with safety protocols, regulatory guidelines, and ethical standards. Maintain accurate records, documentation, and quality control procedures.
  • Lead the design, planning, and execution of research projects, ensuring the utilization of best practices and efficient methodologies. Monitor project progress, assess risks, and make necessary adjustments to meet timelines and deliverables.
  • Recruit, train, and manage a team of scientists and technicians. Provide guidance, support, and mentorship to team members, fostering their professional growth and development.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, such as senior management, to align laboratory goals with broader organizational objectives. Build and maintain partnerships with external organizations, academic institutions, and industry experts to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange
  • Foster a culture of scientific excellence, innovation, and collaboration within the laboratory.
Qualifications:
  • PhD in a relevant scientific field or equivalent experience.
  • Expertise within molecular biology and Immunoassays, confident in developing bioanalytical methods.
  • Experience working in drug discovery for antibodies or other large molecules.
  • Expertise in drug discovery across Neurodegeneration would be advantageous but not essential.
  • Proven experience in laboratory management, including budgeting, resource allocation, and compliance.
  • Experience of setting up a laboratory from scratch.
  • Strong background in scientific research and familiarity with state-of-the-art laboratory techniques.
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse team.
  • Track record of successful project management and delivery of scientific outcomes.
  • Knowledge of regulatory guidelines, safety protocols, and ethical standards applicable to laboratory operations.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
